Program Description

EBYA Baseball Commission has once again endorsed the Youth Umpire Program for the 2018 season.

Requirements to participate in the program:
  • 14-18 years old (however, 13 year olds may be accepted)
  • Reasonable availability to umpire week night games at EBYA fields
  • Attend classroom and on-field instruction and commit to learn rules, umpire mechanics, and game management skills, and implement with confidence

Goals for the program:
  • Provide capable youth to umpire (plate) for EBYA Minor Division games
  • Provide advanced youth to umpire (bases) for EBYA Major Division games
  • Provide opportunity for youth to build on their baseball knowledge, learn a new life-long vocation, and make some money!

The 2018 EBYA Youth Umpire program will look very similar to previous years.  Although the main goal of our Program is to provide umpires for our Minor division games, we will place a greater emphasis on preparing the experienced (and willing) youth umpires to "move-up" and umpire the bases for our Major division games.

Three classroom sessions and an on-field clinic session are scheduled over the next few months.  Attendance at these sessions will qualify you for umpiring Minor Division and/or Major Division games at EB Community Park or Spatola Park.

Classroom Sessions held at the EB Township building (parents welcome):
  • February 27, 2018 @ 7pm-8pm
  • March 12, 2018 @ 7pm-8pm
  • March 21, 2018 @ 7pm-8pm

On-field clinic will be held at EB Community Park Field A:
  • March 25, 2018 @ 5:30pm-7:30pm

Returning umpires are required to attend at least 1 classroom session and new umpires will need to attend at least 2 classroom sessions.  Both returning and new umpires are required to attend the on-field session on March 25th.

Once again, one umpire will be assigned to each Minor Division game and paid $35 per game.  Also, as mentioned above and based on availability, youth base umpires will be assigned to Major division games.  For these games, each youth base umpire will be paid $20 per game.

Game assignments will be made based on your availability and an attempt to spread the assignments across the pool of umpires.   Remember, your game assignments represent your commitment to your partner, the players, coaches, and the league.  No shows will not be tolerated and will jeopardize your  participation in this program.

NO SPECIAL EQUIPMENT NECESSARY.  EBYA provides protective equipment for umpiring behind the plate.  All new umpires will receive an official blue umpire shirt.

Please reply to [email protected] with your intentions to participate in the program this season.
