Summer Pickup Soccer League - Back and Bigger in Year 2!
What started as a small experiment last summer in response to COVID-19 restrictions easing after our cancelled spring soccer season, the Summer Pickup League is back again and growing in year 2! Registration opens on ebya.org at 6pm on Tuesday June 29 and the program is expected to fill quickly.
What’s a pickup league you might ask? Well, it’s actually pretty different than our Spring and Fall Soccer seasons at EBYA. Parents, think back to your childhood when the neighborhood kids got together and made your own sports fun. You saw who showed up at the field, divided teams, and just played. With the help of Mr. Peabody’s Wayback Machine, we’re going back to that much simpler version of soccer for the summer.
What it is:
We have very limited spots available across the divisions and all participants must be registered to play in this league! On one night a week for 5 weeks, we’ll see who shows up within each division, create balanced teams, and get right into playing. So week by week, it’s likely that kids will have some different teammates. No uniforms, no instruction, no practices, and for all divisions except HS, no refs. Just plenty of fun!
The Summer Pickup League will have minimal coaching oversight. In the younger divisions, we need quite a few volunteers, but to be “coordinators” rather than coaches. Ensure we split up the kids and get things running. Then, step back and let the kids play. If we do not get enough volunteers for a particular division, unfortunately we won’t run that division, so please, join in and volunteer!
League starts the week of July 12 and runs for 5 weeks. One weeknight per week – starting around 6:30pm on your child’s assigned weeknight. Sessions will run between 60-90 minutes.
All divisions are the “rising grade” – starting with Kindergarten, all the way through High School. Maximum age is 18, and sorry, no graduated or post-High School players. And please note, all divisions are COED.
Families should expect the likelihood of traditional soccer games, but also be prepared for smaller sided games, depending upon who shows up each week. Please – if you’re available for the full 5 weeks, step up as a volunteer to help us coordinate each division and ensure that kids are able to take the field and have fun!
If you are looking for an instructional league with practices, heavy coaching, and traditional “teams,” the Summer Soccer Pickup League probably isn’t for you, but we’ll be back to our more familiar formats in the fall season.
